Tax Tip Week 17 - Tax Deductible BicyclesWeek

For Professional Contractors and Freelancers taking the healthy option and cycling to work, costs can be deducted against profits in several ways.

The Government introduced the Cycle to Work Scheme as part of the sustainable carbon reduction policy which enables businesses to loan bicycles and related equipment to their employees.

Alternatively, there is also a bicycle mileage allowance payment approved by HMRC for those people who use their own bicycles for work journeys.

The expenses that can be claimed are dependent on whether the bicycle is a company owned or privately owned.

Both of the schemes are Government approved and are not a P11D expense for the employee.

For the full information please see our guidance on Bicycle Expenses.
